Manhattan Musts
Due to the fact that I've been a New Yorker my entire life, I suppose I am a little biased when I say – New York is the greatest city in the world. It’s hard to put into words why I (and many others) feel this way. I guess that’s what it is exactly- a feeling. This city gives a sense of freedom, adventure and endless possibilities. The people in this city definitely are a big reason why this city is so great. We are diverse, open minded, loving and of course a little crazy; but beyond the people that make up this incredible city, are the places within.
It’s challenging to narrow down my favorite places in Manhattan, but I've compiled a list (in no order) of some of them. You may have been to a few of these places yourself or at least heard of them. Either way without further ado, here they are:
1. Worldwide Plaza in Hell’s Kitchen
Living within a two minute stroll from the plaza, I often find myself walking through here to get to my next destination. Often times I stop in and take a seat by the fountain for either a coffee from Starbucks on the South East corner of the square, or a margarita from Blockheads. In addition to these two establishments surrounding the plaza, you will also find Mother Burger, Blue Dog Kitchen, BANN Restaurant, New World Stages and Donna Bell’s Bake Shop to name a few. It is a great place to check your Instagram feed, have a latte, people-watch or just be. Just don’t try to put your feet up on an adjacent chair at the table, because this is prohibited. (49th-50th Street/8th-9th Avenue)
2. Skaryoke at Times Scare
I know what you’re thinking. Well you’re probably thinking a lot of things. To answer your question, yes Times Scare IS in Times Square. Get it?? ;) A unique establishment housing shows, all-year haunted attractions, a chill bar and Saturday night Karaoke. “Scaryoke” is hosted by Shequida, a well-known NYC Drag queen. There are so many great things about this place, that you’ll just have to experience it for yourself. I can be found here frequently on Saturday night singing a tune or two to the most amazing karaoke crowd in all of New York City. (669 8th Avenue bw 42nd & 43rd)
3. Pier 96-Hudson River Park
The obvious place for New Yorkers to sunbathe and picnic is Central Park, which is why I choose to spend my time at a more intimate, quiet and less populated park. I try to keep this place a secret but I can’t help but share my love for this spot. The park even offers free kayaking (thanks to Manhattan Community Boathouse) 7 days a week from mid-May to mid-October. (56th Street & West Side Highway)
4. Power Dance at NYSC (with Johnnie P)
Before I was introduced to this dance class, I kind of hated the gym. You don’t have to be on Broadway or a trained ballerina to take this class. We are taught new choreography each week by the one-and-only, and very talented Johnnie P. We learn all styles of dance and the music selection is always great. Johnnie makes dancing fun, (look easy) and gives us an intense workout each class. I believe the class is also offered at Equinox and Reebok, but as a New York Sports Club member, the class takes place every Monday and Thursday 7:30PM at the 62nd St and Broadway location and Tuesdays 6:30PM at the 49th St and Broadway location. Check out one of our dances here. Can you spot me?? ;)
5. Shopping in Union Square/Flat Iron
Hello my name is Gerald and I am a shopaholic. You will pretty much find me shopping here every weekend. Love this location of the city and you will never feel as crowded as you may in SOHO or Herald Square. You can find pretty much every retailer within these neighborhoods including Nordstrom Rack, Fresh, Zara, Frette, Burlington Coat Factory, Paragon Sports, Aldo, Steve Madden and my favorite vintage store- Reminiscence (74 5th Avenue bw 13th & 14th Street).
