Rhode Island: The Ocean State
I've been a fan of the New England area ever since I first stepped foot in Boston, Massachusetts many years ago. Now that I’ve recently spent some time in Rhode Island this summer, there are only 3 other New England states left for me to visit. Next on the list is Vermont, which I am planning to visit in October to witness the beautiful fall foliage. It’s always exciting to visit a new place and become acquainted with the people and the lay of the land.
My most recent trip began in Providence (RI’s Capital), after a picturesque train ride along the Connecticut coast. After checking into the Omni Providence Hotel located downtown, I explored the city a bit. It felt rather quiet during the day but much livelier at nighttime. (Based on recommendations by the locals,) the most popular attraction to see in Providence seems to be the Water Fire show. (Check the schedule here. ) The city is charming and reminded me a little of Philadelphia and Boston on a much smaller scale.
After staying one day and night in the Capital, I headed to Newport where I would spend the next two days. Newport is just a 45 minute car ride away from Providence and is known for its breathtaking sea cliffs and landmark mansions. I stayed approximately 10 minutes from the downtown Newport area, where it was a quick ride to the ocean, the mansions and most of the great restaurants and shops (located on Thames Street.) I always adore restaurant and shop-lined streets where I can window shop and menu browse. Thames Street was full of energy and just steps from the waterfront and marina in downtown Newport. I had some delicious meals and desserts here during my stay. For dessert I recommend checking out Kilwins and also Cupcake Charlie’s! Right next door to Kilwins there is a Ryan Family Amusements Arcade, which the inner kid in me loved. I spent an hour here each night after dinner (and dessert.)
One of my favorite adventures in Newport was exploring Cliff Walk. An absolutely beautiful and slightly adventurous stroll along the Eastern Shore. Cliff Walk offers a great backdrop for photographs and the perfect location to take in the beauty of Newport.
I also went on a tour inside some of Newport’s famous mansions with stops at The Breakers and Marble House. The audio tours are very insightful with detailed history surrounding the original owners’ lives both in and outside of the home(s.) Original furniture, curtains, rugs, paintings and even kitchenware are still intact inside the mansions. The mansion visits were fascinating and both The Great Gatsby and Titanic came to mind. If you focus hard enough, you can almost imagine exactly what the grand summer soirées were like.
With so much to see and do in Newport, we can't forget to make some time to spend in the sand...
