I <3 P-town
I recently celebrated my birthday and the first leg of the summer in P-town; the land in which I now refer to as “my happy place.” P-Town is short for Provincetown and is located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts (not to be confused with Providence, Rhode Island.) Now that I’ve been to P-Town three times (in a four-year period) and spent a total of twenty-one days there, am I considered a New-Englander? Maybe just a part-time one ;)
Getting there from Manhattan isn’t too difficult. You can drive or fly of course, but I like to take the Amtrak to Boston (4 hours) and then the Fast Ferry (90 minutes) from South Boston to P-Town. The journey is both scenic and relaxing.
There are a lot of guest houses and Bed & Breakfasts’ located in the town - as well as some hotels. I like to rent a private home which usually requires a 7 day reservation (Saturday to Saturday.) Check out HomeAway for house rentals. The town is relatively small, but I try to stay within a 5 minute or-so walk from the Macmillan Pier (Ferry) and closer to Commercial Street which is the main road, outlining the Cape Cod Bay.
What does one do in P-Town? It’s a beach town in a nutshell, but there’s also a great night life, terrific restaurants and the cutest shops around. Activities include: hiking, bicycle riding, whale watching, nightly shows, a piano bar and karaoke seven nights a week.
Getting to the beach is rather simple. There are two beaches: Race Point and Herring Cove. To get there, you take a shuttle ($2 each way) which is located close to the Ferry. The ride is short and very convenient. Both beach locations are beautiful with the main difference being that Herring Cove has a newly built food hut, Far land, that serves perhaps the best sandwich I ever had called the “Pilgrim Lake” (served on your choice of bread: roasted turkey, cheddar cheese and cranberry mayonnaise.) There is also a Far land on Bradford Street in town. I like to visit both beaches which are both worth checking out. I would say Race Point (even though doesn’t offer the “Pilgrim Lake” sandwich) is a bit more scenic.
One of my goals in life now (seriously) is to eventually own my very own home in P-town. I just know that this is going to be one of those places that I frequently visit time and time again. It truly is my happy place…
